Receive with meekness the Implanted Word – John Piper

Before Dr. Piper begins his sermon, in 2008, he shows a new translation of a New Testament into a language that did not exist in written form, that missionaries that Bethlehem Baptist Church sent out to Cameroon, Africa – they worked on this language and translation since 1973, being sent out in 1971.  What a great example of the Great Commission going forth in this world today, and it’s relationship to the Word of God.

From James 1:21

Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

see the connection with James 1:18

In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

I love this part (not written out, but said with passion – great preaching!) where he talks about our hearts are full of so many other things and how to spoil an appetite for Thanksgiving Dinner – “eat a loaf of white bread for breakfast”, “munch on candy all afternoon” and “drink eggnog” and then sit down for the Thanksgiving feast – you won’t eat.  Jesus said “My Word has no place in you”.  John 8:37.  Wow.  Our hearts and minds being filled with other things – too much TV and internet, etc. worry, etc. can make us full of other things so that the Word of God is not finding a place in us; it is not doing deep down in us.  Great preaching by Dr. Piper:

But this assumes that the word has been implanted. “Receive with meekness the implanted word.” That’s what happened in verse 18. “He brought us forth by the word of truth.” We were dead. We had no place for the word of God in us. We did not desire it or love it. Jesus said of the leaders who were trying to kill him: “You seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you” (John 8:37). The word of truth was not implanted in them.

Be careful how you take this. These leaders knew their Bibles better than anyone. But the word of God “found no place in them.” It was not implanted in them. Before we are born again, our hearts are full of other things that push out the word of God. We are like people who are so stuffed with candy between meals that when the feast is offered we are not hungry. In fact, our stomach turns at the thought of eating. This is how unregenerate people feel about the real meaning of God’s word. They feel no need for it. So it has no place. It’s not implanted in them.

About Ken Temple

I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I am a sinner who has been saved by the grace of God alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), through faith alone (Galatians 2:16; Romans 3:28; 4:1-16), in Christ alone (John 14:6). But a true faith does not stay alone, it should result in change, fruit, good works, and deeper levels of repentance and hatred of my own sins of selfishness and pride. I am not better than you! I still make mistakes and sin, but the Lord is working on me, conforming me to His character. (Romans 8:28-29; 2 Corinthians 3:16-18) When I do sin, I hate the sin as it is an affront to God, and seek His forgiveness in repentance. (Mark 1:15; 2 Corinthians 7:7-10; Colossians 3:5-16 ) Praise God for His love for sinners (Romans 5:8), shown by the voluntary coming of Christ and His freely laying down His life for us (John 10:18), becoming flesh/human (John 1:1-5; 1:14; Philippians 2:5-8), dying for sins of people from all nations, tribes, and cultures (Revelation 5:9), on the cross, in history, rising from the dead (Romans 10:9-10; Matthew 28, Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24; John 20-21; 1 Corinthians chapter 15). His resurrection from the dead proved that Jesus is the Messiah, the eternal Son of God, the word of God from eternity past; and that He was all the gospels say He was and that He is truth and the life and the way to salvation. (John 14:6)
