This is a good discussion and debate between Owen Stachen (Conservative Christian) vs. Progressive Christian (Colby Martin).
The so called “Progressive Christian” (Colby Martin) shows the devastating results of not believing that Genesis is God’s Word and true and historical. This really demonstrates that “Progressive Christianity” is not really Christianity at all – it is the old liberalism clothed in new cool and updated clothes.
This movement is a further movement of the “Emerging church” (Brian McLaren, Rob Bell) and made very well known by the late Rachel Held Evans, who sadly passed away in May of 2019. She was very gifted at getting her message out that basically gutted Christianity of objective truth. She rejected many major doctrines of the faith – Inspiration and Inerrancy of the Bible, Creation, hell, and as a result, rejected missions and evangelism; and was very famous for advocating that someone can be LGBTQ and also be a Christian. (Contra 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Romans 1:18-26, Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Genesis 19; 1 Timothy 1:8-11.)
Colby Martin bases his rejection of marriage as only between one and one woman by rejecting Creation in six days, the historical reality of the first 2 people, Adam and Eve, and he rejects that the serpent in Genesis 3 did indeed talk to Eve, and we know from the rest of Scripture that this was Satan himself coming to Eve in the form of a serpent. (Revelation chapters 12 and 20 tells us who the serpent was. We see him in Job chapters 1-2, Zechariah, he is the spirit / cherub / angel in the garden of Eden who became an evil spirit / Satan / the devil (Ezekiel 28), and all through the New Testament.) So Colby Martin thinks homosexuality is not sinful and that homosexuals and lesbians can be married and that that is a good thing.
This is a clear rejection of Genesis 1-2, man and woman, and marriage, but also a rejection of Jesus own understanding of Genesis 1:1, 1:26-28; 2:18-25; 5:1-2, as demonstrated in Matthew 19:4-6. Jesus alludes to all of those passages.
Colby Martin also rejects the doctrine of eternal hell and says that would not come from Jesus – yet Jesus is the very one who taught the most on that reality! (Mark 9:47-48; Matthew 5:21-30; Matthew 13:39-40; Matthew 25; Matthew 10:28; Luke 12:5; see also Revelation 14:10; 20:10-15)
